CIVITAS / ELECTROMOBILITY

The Limassol Tourist Board in collaboration with   Stratagem Energy  implements the action ‘Safe Routes to School’, within the framework of the co-funded project  ‘Civitas Destinations’.

On 08/03/2018, the first workshop has been held at the Elementary School of Kato Polemidia, Melina Merkouri. The aim of the workshop was to promote viable and safer mobility modes to get to their schools, cultivating the ground for a greener approach in mobility by young people. The workshop has conducted interactive exercises on the safe transportation of children on foot, by bike, by bus, and car-pooling.

In total, 90 students had the opportunity to express their thoughts and problems regarding urban mobility and safety transportation issues. In general, students were very active and interested during the workshops, and discuss the benefits of using sustainable urban mobility. ‘Safe Routes to school’

The Limassol Tourism Board and the company Stratagem Energy Ltd, in the context of the European program ‘Civitas Destinations’, have been organizing workshops in Primary Schools in the Limassol region regarding ‘Safe Routes to school’. Twelve primary schools are currently participating in this action.

The ‘Civitas Destinations’ project is aiming at the promotion and development of sustainable mobility in six European cities. Participating cities are Limassol (Cyprus), Madeira (Portugal), Las Palmas (Spain), Valletta (Malta), Elba (Italy) and Rethymno (Greece).

The measure ‘Safe Routes to School’ aims to promote the use of sustainable and safe modes for students to move to and from school. More specifically, it concerns travelling to school on foot, by bike, by bus or with carpooling. The use of sustainable mobility modes ensures a safer transfer with the minimum footprint to the environment.

Workshops have already been organized in ΙΖ΄ Primary School (Kato Polemidia), Melinas Mercouri, and Linopetra Primary School with the participation of 165 students in total. In the context of the workshops students took part in interactive exercises and team games regarding safe transportation and had a chance to express their thoughts and worries regarding safety and sustainable mobility. In general, the students have demonstrated intense interest and discussed the benefits of using sustainable mobility modes.

Workshops in Primary Schools will be completed by May 2018 and it is expected that more than 800 students will have the opportunity to participate.

At the same time, research regarding safe routes to school is carried out among parents of primary school children, with the support of the Parents and Guardians Association. The results of the research will be announced upon completion of this effort.
