The Limassol Tourism Board and Stratagem Ltd implements the action "Safe Routes to School" within the framework of the co-funded project "Civitas Destinations", where Elementary schools from Limassol have been involved.
On 14/03/2018, the second workshop has been held at the Elementary School of Linopetra. In total 75 students from 1st and 2nd grades participated in the workshop where they had the opportunity through experiential workshops to move on foot in a specially designed area with pedestrian crossings and traffic signals as well.
Also, students had the opportunity to use their bicycle in the ‘traffic park’ that was created in the school’s yard. All children were very motivated and interested about the experience during the workshop.
In addition, students worked in groups and expressed their thoughts and concerns on safe transportation to and from the school. It has to be mentioned that a total number of 20 students from 1st and 2nd grades go to school on foot, a number that is particularly encouraging. In closing, both students and teachers expressed their wish to repeat the workshop where more students of the school will participate.

‘Safe Routes to school’
The Limassol Tourism Board and the company Stratagem Energy Ltd, in the context of the European program ‘Civitas Destinations’, have been organizing workshops in Primary Schools in the Limassol region regarding ‘Safe Routes to school’. Twelve primary schools are currently participating in this action.
The ‘Civitas Destinations’ project is aiming at the promotion and development of sustainable mobility in six European cities. Participating cities are Limassol (Cyprus), Madeira (Portugal), Las Palmas (Spain), Valletta (Malta), Elba (Italy) and Rethymno (Greece).
The measure ‘Safe Routes to School’ aims to promote the use of sustainable and safe modes for students to move to and from school. More specifically, it concerns travelling to school on foot, by bike, by bus or with carpooling. The use of sustainable mobility modes ensures a safer transfer with the minimum footprint to the environment.
Workshops have already been organized in ΙΖ΄ Primary School (Kato Polemidia), Melinas Mercouri, and Linopetra Primary School with the participation of 165 students in total. In the context of the workshops students took part in interactive exercises and team games regarding safe transportation and had a chance to express their thoughts and worries regarding safety and sustainable mobility. In general, the students have demonstrated intense interest and discussed the benefits of using sustainable mobility modes.
Workshops in Primary Schools will be completed by May 2018 and it is expected that more than 800 students will have the opportunity to participate.
At the same time, research regarding safe routes to school is carried out among parents of primary school children, with the support of the Parents and Guardians Association. The results of the research will be announced upon completion of this effort.
