Ecological Trail Akrotiri

The Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company, with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, has proceeded with the creation of the new Ecological Trail “Akrotiri – Salt Lakes – Environmental Centre.”
This initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at highlighting the cultural and religious heritage, the natural wealth, and the biodiversity of the area, through the use of modern technological tools.

The Akrotiri Peninsula is one of the most important protected natural areas in Cyprus and forms part of the European Natura 2000 Network, hosting rare ecosystems and significant cultural monuments that require protection, promotion, enhancement, and preservation.

The Ecological Trail has been designed with absolute respect for the sensitive natural environment of the Akrotiri Salt Lakes, an area of international ecological importance and a key stopover for migratory birdlife. Through mild and carefully planned interventions, safe and well-organized access is ensured, without disturbing the natural balance of the ecosystem.

Along the route, informative signage has been installed, enriched with QR codes that provide digital guidance to individual points of interest. By using mobile devices, visitors can access thematic audio content featuring documented information in multiple languages.

The project strengthens environmental education, accessibility, and sustainable visitation, contributing to the development of ecotourism in the Limassol District. At the same time, it enriches the region’s tourism product with gentle and high-quality forms of tourism, such as ecotourism and educational tourism, highlighting the area’s natural wealth through modern digital solutions.
