The father of computers and artificial intelligence, and the mind that ended the Second World War at least two years earlier…
Alan Turing, an eccentric genius who played a crucial role in the Allied victory in World War II. He broke the complex German Enigma code, enabling the Allied forces to anticipate German plans. Since his work remained classified as top secret for years after the war, no one knew how much he was owed when he was later prosecuted for breaking another “code” — the taboo of homosexuality.
Turing, the father of computer science, was convicted of gross indecency and forced to undergo hormonal treatment. The play “The Man Who Broke the Code” presents who he was, what happened to him, and why…
Alpha Square, faithful to a repertoire that highlights dramatic moments in human history, presents the play by Hugh Whitemore, based on the book Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges, translated by Andreas Araouzos and directed by Eleni Anastasiou. Derek Jacobi portrayed Turing in the play’s premiere in 1986 in the West End, and later on Broadway.
Cast includes Andreas Araouzos, Varnavas Kyriacis, Lenia Sorokou, Thanasis Drakopoulos, Marilia Charidimou, Evros Vasileiou, and Stavros Dimopoulos. Assistant director: Christina Psara. With set design by Giorgos Yiannou, costumes by Rea Olympiou, original music by Dimitris Zachariou, and lighting design by Nikos Mylonas, the production explores the life of this unjustly treated genius, to whom humanity owes so much — and to whom the British government issued a posthumous apology, later followed by a royal pardon from Queen Elizabeth.
